Chapter eight
Mark, Hazel, and the men reach the conclusion of the woods. They face the back of a neighborhood, surrounded by a fence. Dead bodies hang from the top of the fence, by chains that wrap around their necks. The naked bodies show the wounds inflicted. Mark can see the entry and exit points of the bullet wounds. Burns cover a couple of the bodies, and a few corpses are missing limbs.
They climb over the fence. Hazel leads Mark and his men to a house. They surround the back of the house and hazel puts his ear to the door. Mark watches his surroundings, finger on the trigger, waiting for something to appear. Mark’s concentration breaks when Hazel kicks the backdoor open.
The men run inside the house one by one and Mark follows. Hazel tells the men, “Go upstairs!”
Mark searches through the darkness for the stairs. He creeps up the steps listening for any movements. He searches a bedroom; flipping beds over and ransacking the closest. Mark yells down the stairs, “Everything is clear up here!”
Hazel comes up the stairs and leads Mark into a bedroom. Hazel tells Mark, “This is your room. I want you to stand guard by the window.”
Mark looks out the window and scans the neighborhood.
The wind blows through the deserted streets moving the trash and debris. Hazel sits next to Mark and asks, “Have you seen anything?”
Mark replies, “Just trash. I thought we were going to this place you spoke about.”
Hazel tells Mark, “Listen to your surroundings and you will know when it’s time. The people roam and collect what they can. The people are not free. It’s a society controlled by a circle of men. Without the circle of men, the streets would be bloody. If you think what you seen was something, you are in for a big surprise. How do you think the city got the way it is? The circle of men brought order to the city.”
Mark asks, “Who are these men?”
Hazel explains, “They are men who strike fear in the hearts of others; the invincible. They send their people out to bring back information and weapons. The head doctor rests there. The circle of men decides who lives and dies.”
Mark says, “If the men control all, then why are people warring in the streets.”
Hazel tells Mark, “This is hell. Groups like mines answer to no one. The societies respect us, because they know our wrath.”
Hazel lies back on the bed and falls asleep.
Mark looks out the window aiming his gun. He aims at a house and taps the trigger, testing his aim. He aims at the street signs, taps the trigger and says, “Bang.” Mark aims at a window and taps the trigger, and the gun fires.
Hazel pops up and asks him, “What was that?”
Mark tells Hazel, “I saw someone.”
Hazel looks out the window and asks, “Where? I don't see anybody.”
Mark tells Hazel, “I missed, and they got away.”
Hazel says, “Next time don't miss. You will blow our cover.”
Mark says, “I feel tired, is that normal?”
Hazel tells Mark, “You still eat, sleep, and shit.
